"Please, someone help me!"
Her desperate scream carried over the forest, but even in her terror Lucille knew that no-one would hear it out here in the deep forest. And even if some traveller was nearby, how could they save her from four orcs? She struggled weakly against the ropes that secured her to the large tree truck, but it was no use. The biggest of the orcs laughed at her, baring even more of his long yellow fangs, saliva dripping from his hairy chin as he thought of the fresh human meat he would soon be eating. One of the orcs preparing the cooking fire looked up and gave a harsh grunt and the orc wiped it's chin, smearing more dirt across its face with a filthy sleeve and advancing towards her. She watched its ugly red eyes shining with hunger as it moved to within a few paces of her and slowly drew a long, curved knife from it's belt. Lucille screamed again and struggled against the rope, kicking at the orc's legs to keep it away, but in her life as a rich merchant's daughter she had never developed much strength, and she was helpless to stop it grabbing her hair and pulling her head back, ready to cut her throat. She could feel the orc's warm breath, stinking of rotting meat, and she knew that she had only seconds before the cruel blade sliced into her neck. She screamed again "Help! Save me!" but she knew it was too late.
Suddenly, there was the bright ringing sound of a sword being drawn and a deep, manly voice carried across the forest clearing
"I don't think the lady is enjoying your company, orc"
The orcs around the fire sprang up, scrabbling for their weapons, and the big orc spun around, raising his knife and looking for the speaker. Lucille, her hair now free of the orc's grip, looked across the clearing and her heart leapt in her chest. A tall knight stepped out from the trees, he wore bright silver plate armour and a full faced helm with a white plume and carried a shining longsword. He stood facing the orcs, his feet planted wide apart with one gauntletted hand on his hip, the other resting his sword across his shoulder. As if on command, a bright shaft of sunlight broke through the branches above, making his armour shine so brightly that it hurt her eyes to look on him, but she could not tear her gaze away. He spoke again, this time Lucille thought there was an amused tone to his powerful voice. "I'm afraid I'm going to have to kill you four orcs now. Still, no hard feelings chaps, I'm sure you're decent sorts when you're not eating innocent girls." He stepped back with one leg and raised his sword, making it flash in the sunlight. "Lets get this over with then, I have to deliver some medicines to the orphanage soon or little Timmy and poor Jane might be in a spot of trouble." The orcs glanced at each other, then one of them let out a howling battlecry and they charged towards the knight as one. He stepped to one side and his sword flashed twice. An orc head landed with a thud on the ground and another of its fellows collapsed forwards holding an arm across its chest, dead even before it fell.
The two remaining orcs backed off warily, and Lucille could see that they were afraid now. One of them stepped in and aimed a clumsy cut at the knight's head, but before it could connect he jumped forward, his shining sword biting into the orc's neck. The last orc saw it's chance and rushed forward, thrusting its sword at the join between the armour plates under the knight's arm. The human spun to one side, wrenching his sword free and slashing it across the orc's stomach. It staggered and fell to its knees with a cry, which was abruptly ended when the reverse cut sent its head rolling across the forest floor.
He gave a booming, manly laugh and strode over to Lucille. "You're safe now my lady. I don't think think these lads will be bothering you again."
"Thank you! You saved my life!" Lucille cried
"No need to thank me, I'm a hero. Thats what we do."
"But who are you?" she asked, her heart racing with excitement more than fear now.
"My name is Sir Acernon Valourheart" he said, removing his helm and flicking his head back to rearrange the long blonde hair that fell over one side of his face. "But my friends call me Ace."
Ace in his younger days .
